The Set-Up, the Fall. Will Hamas play along for now.

In part of Trump’s 20-point Peace Plan the Gaza technocratic committee forms. which is supposed to assume responsibility for rebuilding Gaza and replace the Hamas government. The key here is to replace Hamas. This Palestinian committee is tasked with managing day-to-day affairs of Gaza’s residents. This includes addressing humanitarian needs, removal of rubble, water and sewage, and other civic services.

However, Palestinians seem divided over the success for the newly established technocratic committee, while some welcomed the formation as it could mark the beginning of a new era, though some think Hamas would not allow.

Hamas no longer in power?

Palestinian Authority understand that Hamas will no longer have power or legitimacy within the Strip. Be warned that Hamas would do its utmost to maintain its presence in Gaza and here again is a big problem.

The committee members won’t allow Hamas to try to take control again, ever. These are professional technocrats, each with expertise in their field, who will make a big effort to implement the next phase for rehabilitation in the Strip. The international mediators, don’t want Hamas to play any role in the management of Gaza.

It’s estimated that the Gaza-based committee’s chances of succeeding are about 50/50.

Although Hamas has publicly said it would hand over its ministries and other institutions to the new governing body, some Palestinians remain skeptical.

For now, Hamas may not hinder the committee’s work, but will it quietly try to create its own shadow government.
