The continuation of war that the Gulf states once told Trump to stop.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar helped talk Trump out of a major escalation in early August. Now he’s weighing a major decision on Iran again, including whether to attack its regime.

With immediate attention needed the Gulf states turned to America, but fear being drawn deeper into a war, with their energy infrastructure already under pressure from Iranian aligned attacks. At first, they wanted to contain the conflict but now the see they are being drug into it.

Gulf states thinking, the possibility that if they are struck, American backing may fall short. Let's remember, at this time the Trump administration is letting the Gulf states standalone, at least for now.

Trump said early in August that he had called off a major attack on Iran after appeals from Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, believing an agreement with Tehran was close at hand.

Now continued Iran-aligned proxies strikes on Saudi energy infrastructure from Yemen and Iraq are stoking worries of a wider energy shock. Sustained high oil prices if the conflict spreads further, the economic fallout could reach well past the Gulf.

So far Trump has shown little inclination to intervene directly on Saudi Arabia’s behalf.

Even though with no easy way out or guarantees, needed is a stronger protection which carries an escalatory costs. Also noting restraint can be read by adversaries as hesitation.

The central question for Washington, will be how the Gulf states view the choice between renewed escalation and a diplomatic off-ramp, if possible.

Frustration is building behind the scenes with Gulf leaders worried Trump is not able to manage the diplomacy necessary to secure peace with Iran.

Meeting's go on.

One meeting is unlikely to resolve the larger US-Iran confrontation. The most consequential signals will be whether Trump indicates a preference for talks, escalation, or a strategy of containing the conflict while protecting Gulf partners.

It remains unclear what security assurances Gulf leaders will seek in private, what Washington would be willing to provide, and whether Tehran would treat any new US posture as a basis for negotiation or as a provocation. No public outline of a Gulf proposal had emerged so far.

For Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, success may be their objective as to preserve US support without paying the price of a wider war on their soil. This is the tension behind the New York talks: they need American protection, but the decisions meant to demonstrate it could expose them to even greater danger.

Trump digs himself deeper into a hole, you can almost call it a bogged down or quagmire, or more like being stuck in a miry clay.
